4 Ways to Reduce the Risk of Pregnancy Gingivitis

During the nine months a woman carries a child, the risk of pregnancy gingivitis in Lockport increases. The hormonal changes that occur as well as the cravings and even morning sickness can increase the likelihood for a female to develop inflammation and infection within the gum tissues. Unfortunately, the results of untreated gingivitis and/or advanced gum disease can lead to premature labor and low birth weight for the baby. Here are four ways to minimize the risk and ensure safe delivery.

Keep Regular Dental Checkups and Cleanings

Seeing a dentist every six months for regular dental checkups and cleanings is the most effective way to reduce your risk and ensure gum disease is not developing. Although pregnancy (during certain trimesters) does limit some of the treatments and practices that can occur, a qualified professional can still check for signs of tooth decay, infection, inflammation, or abnormalities. If found, they can be treated appropriately to decrease the chances of worsening symptoms and instead, improve the status of a person’s gum tissues.

Eating Healthy Foods

The cravings that can develop throughout pregnancy can be difficult to avoid, especially if a woman enjoys sweets. While fine in moderation, healthy foods must be consumed regularly. Fresh fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, whole grains, and dairy products are beneficial to any diet, but women need to be mindful of the types of meat they can eat.

Too many sugary beverages or starchy foods can increase the risk of cavities and gum disease, which is why dentists and doctors recommend women drink plenty of water throughout these nine months.

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Whether it is at home or at the office, brushing and flossing are essential. Women should plan to brush their teeth twice a day for two minutes using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Also, flossing should occur at least once each day before bedtime. A dentist can also provide safe and effective rinsing solutions to help flush out any bacteria and food particles that remain.

Individuals who work outside of the home should plan to carry a travel-sized toothbrush and toothpaste as well as dental floss to the office or out to eat to ensure remnants of food do not remain on teeth too long.

Use a Saltwater Mix

Should a patient notice any minor swelling or bleeding around the gum tissue, they should rinse with a saltwater mixture. Gargling with warm water and a teaspoon of salt can help to reduce swelling and cleanse the mouth of any bad oral bacteria that will try to infect and worsen a person’s oral health.

These safe and effective techniques are recommended by dentists to reduce the chances of pregnancy gingivitis. However, should a patient wish to know more or inquire about other methods of minimizing the risk, they should contact a member of their dental team for further assistance.
