When Screens Steal Your Sleep: Cell Phones & Sleep Apnea

Cell phones have become the one thing most people can’t seem to live without. Whether it’s checking emails first thing in the morning or “doom scrolling” at night, the amount of time spent looking at a screen is rapidly increasing. While optometrists, counselors, and physicians regularly speak about the harmful effects of cell phone use, many sleep dentists discourage patients from engaging in screen time before bed, especially if sleep apnea exists. Keep reading to learn how scrolling in the evenings can lead to restless nights.

Why Are Cell Phones Before Bed Discouraged?

Cell phones contain blue light, which is also commonly found in other screens, such as tablets and computers.

Unlike natural sunlight, which is good for the body, blue light offers no real benefit because it does not encourage melatonin production. As a result, you may feel less tired at bedtime, especially if you are scrolling on your phone. Engaging in this habit can lead to a lack of deep sleep, which is necessary for daily productivity and cognitive function.

Your body needs ample rest each night; however, regular blue light exposure can limit time spent in two of the most essential stages of sleep: slow-wave and rapid-eye movement (REM).

How Do Cell Phones Make Sleep Apnea Worse?

If you have sleep apnea, you already understand the struggle of interrupted sleep every night. Using your cell phone before bed—a habit that alerts the brain to wake up instead of preparing for rest—amplifies symptoms, making it harder to get a good night’s sleep.

Not only are you less likely to stick to a nightly sleep schedule, but you’re also likely to suffer from bouts of paused breathing because of a blocked airway. The two problems combined can make each day feel impossible.

How to Set Yourself Up for Better Sleep

There are a few ways you can take control of your nightly sleep:

  • See a professional about your sleep apnea symptoms and inquire about a formal diagnosis and possible treatment options (i.e., oral appliance).
  • Turn off all screens at least one hour before bed.
  • Keep bedroom lights dim if you need time to wind down before going to sleep.
  • Read a book or magazine, or listen to music or a podcast.

Take better care of yourself by making the necessary changes and seeking professional help to improve your nightly sleep and quality of life.
